10/10 Vacation Planning: How to Create the Perfect Trip Itinerary
The worst thing you can do on vacation is to try to ‘do it all’ without a plan. As a result, you’ll be stuck in traffic under the scorching sun, eating in questionable places, and returning home more tired than before your trip.

1. The Golden Rule of the ‘Sea Morning’ (08:00 – 11:30)
The beach in Bulgaria is beautiful until noon.
- Why: The water is at its cleanest, the sun is not yet aggressive, and there are plenty of free parking spaces and beach spots.
- Timing: By 11:30 AM, when the majority of tourists are just leaving their hotels, you should already be leaving the beach. This will save your skin from sunburn and your nerves from crowds.
2. Time for the ‘Big Move’ and the Mountains (12:00 – 16:00)
While everyone else is ‘baking’ on the coast, use this time for car trips with air conditioning.
- Where to go: Head towards the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina). Even a 15-minute drive inland from Sveti Vlas, the temperature drops by 4-5 degrees.
- Logistics: At this time, the roads between resorts are clear. This is the perfect moment to reach eco-trails or panoramic viewpoints above the sea.
- Lunch: Look for small restaurants in villages along the way. Prices there are half of those on the coast, and the food is homemade.
3. Cultural Block: Evening Nessebar (18:00 – 21:00)
Old Nessebar is an open-air museum, but visiting it during the day at peak season is a mistake.
- How to avoid traffic: The main traffic jam at the entrance to Nessebar forms from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.
- Life hack: Arrive either by 5:30 PM (when daytime excursions have left, and evening ones haven’t arrived yet), or leave your car in Ravda or the new part of the city and walk.
- Light: For photographers, the ‘golden hour’ in Nessebar begins an hour before sunset – shadows fall softly, highlighting the ancient masonry of the churches.
4. Logistical Tricks: How to Beat Traffic
During peak season (July-August), Bulgarian roads require strategy:
- Friday and Sunday: Avoid the Burgas — Varna highway in the afternoon. At this time, locals are traveling to/from the sea, creating congestion.
- Gas Stations: Fill up in the evening or early morning. At lunchtime, gas stations by the sea often have queues of tourists. Reminder: for your car, it’s best to choose trusted networks (Shell, Rompetrol), especially if you’re using 98 or 100 octane fuel.
Example of a ’10/10 Schedule’ for one day:
- 08:00 – 11:00: Beach (Sveti Vlas or Dinevi Marina).
- 11:30 – 12:30: Buy fresh fruit and have a light snack at home (apartments with kitchens are key!).
- 13:00 – 16:00: Trip to the mountains or towards Ravadinovo Castle (air conditioning is your best friend).
- 17:00 – 18:00: Siesta (rest at home).
- 18:30 – 21:00: Walk around Nessebar + dinner at a trusted fish restaurant.
- 21:30: Return without traffic.
